Two extremely talented and gifted seamstresses, Tammy Kaufman and Carol Yasechko, volunteered their time and expertise to make memory pillows for the CVC "Missing Piece of My Heart" support group. Each participant brought in a T-shirt, jersey or dress which was worn by their deceased child. The article of clothing was then transformed into a memory pillow with each pillow being personalized with an embroidered saying of the parent's liking.
The CVC wishes to express its most heart-felt appreciation to these wonderful women. Their act of kindness was priceless and meant so much to the parents who were thrilled with the pillows.
The support group is a confidential, open ended group that meets on the last Thursday of each month in the CVC Conference Center room located in Oliver Square Plaza, Uniontown. The group shares their treasured memories and their loss. Together, they discuss their shock, frustration and pain of losing a child suddenly to a violent act.
The group also welcomes professional guest speakers, activities such as collage art, celebrating each child's birthday, a picnic and a very special holiday memorial service in December.
Members are offered crisis intervention and referrals to CVC staff and other social service agencies as needed. Our goal is that parents and families realize that we recognize their tragic loss. Each child was unique. Therefore, the journey for each parent and family member will be different. They learn to integrate their "new reality" and move forward in life without the physical presence of their child who died. Eventually, with support, reconciliation, a renewed sense of energy, confidence and the ability to fully acknowledge the reality of death, each member will become resolved with the activities and pleasures of life. Hopefully, they will once again learn to smile and be happy.
